THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: FROM THEORETICAL TO EMPIRICAL PERSPECTIVES

An international conference seeks to bring together scholars of inter-disciplinary fields to understand the history of violence against women from theoretical and empirical standpoints. We welcome proposals from scholars of different disciplines of humanities and social sciences such as history, law, sociology, criminology, penology, victimology, anthropology, psychology, gender studies etc.

Specific topic areas may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sexual harassment, sexual assault and coercion, homicide and other forms of violence against women in historical perspective;

  • History of social movements seeking to end violence against women;

  • Magnitude and nature of violence against women in different settings and historical periods;

  • Criminal law definitions and problems of gender based violence;

  • Criminalization of gender based violence;

  • Criminal justice system and gender based violence;

  • Intimate partner violence;

  • Victims and perpetrators;

  • Violence against women during peace and war historical periods;

  • Prevention of violence against women;

  • Construction of violence against women in the Mass Media;

  • Different discourses of the gender-based violence;

  • Theoretical approaches and explanations of violence against women phenomenon.

    The conference organizers will provide accommodation for two nights for 6 international participants, but speakers are expected to cover their own travel expenses.

    There is no participation and registration fee!
    Working language is English.
    Please submit your paper proposals consisting of no more than 200 words to sigita.cerneviciute@vdu.lt The deadline for the paper proposals is July 1, 2020. Successful candidates will be notified by 15th of July.

    This conference is a part of a research project “Violence against women: from harassment to crime in 20th century Lithuania”, funded by the Research Council of Lithuania (No. P-LIP-18-115). Project manager: dr. Monika Kareniauskaitė.

    ***** The conference organizers are aware of COVID-19 pandemic and hope that it will be under control until the end of November. However, if the situation will not be resolved by then, the organizers will not put conference participants at risk and the conference will be postponed or organized online.
